
Walter E. Mason, 87 of Monaca, died Friday, June 18, 2010 at Rochester Manor. He was born March 9, 1923 in Bolair, WV, son of the late Calvin and Estella (Holmes) Mason. He was retired from LTV, the Aliquippa Works of J&L Steel, in the Seamless Tube Inspection Department.
In later years, Walter enjoyed playing stringed musical instruments and as a hobby also repaired and sold them.
Walter proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served five years aboard the Destroyer USS Madison seeing action during the Battle for Ansio Beach, at the signing of the Peace Treaty in Tokyo, Japan, as well as many other theatres and campaigns.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Ernestine; four sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by three children: Deborah M. Reed, Cave City, KY; Larry H. Mason, Ohioville; and Joseph E. Mason, Falls Creek, PA; four grandchildren: Russell Mason, Charles T. Reed, Robert A. Reed and Timothy A. Reed; three great grandchildren and a lifelong friend and sister-in-law: Evelene Collins.
Friends will be received Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in the funeral home. Private entombment will follow. On line condolences will be offered at www.saul-gabauer.com.
