William A. Littell

William A. Littell, 96, is at peace; he passed away Monday morning, April 9, 2012, in his home. He was born October 22, 1915, in Beaver Falls, son of the late David Harrison and Clara J. (Robbins) Littell. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, as a Staff Sergeant under the command of General George Patton. He was in the Battles of Normandy and the Rhineland. Bill could recount exact details of the war. He would reminisce of his service time, 2 years, 10 months and 13 days; and recall the mine explosion that sent shrapnel flying into his arm and shoulder, an injury for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He also, with vivid description, told the story of how the hospital was under attack while he was awaiting surgery for his battle wound. He was awarded four Bronze Battle Stars and also a Bronze Star Medal. Despite all that Bill had experienced, he always remained a kind and gentle man.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and became a millwright working in the machine shop of PBI Industries. Bill retired after 42 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Beaver Falls. In his leisure, Bill developed a passion for the game of golf. As an avid golfer, he played as often as he could, even into his 90’s. When unable to hit the links, he could still be found putting around the house.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years: Bette (Boyle) Littell and two sisters: Emma Mae Elliott, his twin and Mary Gilliland.

Bill is survived by one son: William David Littell, Beaver Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law: Susie and Kevin Patsy, Beaver Falls; Carol and Ken Sanders, Darlington; five grandchildren: Melissa (Daniel) Finsley and Arcadia; Lindsey and Chris Loos; Emily (fiancé Michael Pisano) Patsy; Chad Sanders; Cory Sanders; and one great grandson: Levi Loos.

Friends will be received Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). His funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation, Rev. Dr. Paul Holland, officiating. Military Honors will be presented by members of the Beaver County Special Unit at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Private interment will follow.
