William A. Smith, Jr., 81, of New Sewickley Township, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2015. He was born July 24, 1934 in Leet Township, son of the late William and Josephine (Hovis) Smith. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force Reserve, reaching the rank of Airman First Class. William retired from U.S. Steel, American Bridge Company, after 34 years of service, where he was an industrial engineer. He also served and worked with the American Bridge Credit Union, and later worked at West-Air Com Federal Credit Union.
Bill was a member of the New Sewickley American Legion Post 512; the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ambridge; and the American Bridge Management Retirement Club.
After retirement, Bill and Frances became snowbirds and loved spending the winters in Deland, Florida. Although Bill has lived year-round in Pennsylvania for the past eighteen years, he has stayed in touch with his many friends in Florida. In Pennsylvania, he was affectionately known as the “mayor” around the neighborhood and will be sorely missed by his neighborhood buddies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Nanette Hoffman Smith, December 1983; his wife: Frances Crane Smith, October 1995; a grandson: Matthew Alicandro, September 1990; his sister: Doris Lavelle, February 2015; and his beloved canine companion Max.
Bill is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Desiree and Joseph Alicandro, New Sewickley Township; Debra and Charles “Pete” Grove, Bell Acres; three granddaughters: Barbara (Graham) Taylor, Bell Acres; Laura (Jake Chartrand) Grove, Sewickley; Megan Alicandro, New Sewickley Township; four great grandchildren: Franklin and Nanette Taylor; Joseph and Wesley Chartrand; a dear friend: Sally Potts; brother-in-law: Harry Lavelle; and Frances’ daughter: Judy (Steve) Dalton of Florida.
Friends will be received today, Sunday, October 25, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (GPS 848 Sunflower Road, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). A Blessing Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, with the Rev. Fr. Paul Kuppe, Pastor of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, officiating. Private interment will be in the Garden of the Resurrection, Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
