

Garland B. Hicks, 73, of Machesney Park, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017. Born July 7, 1943 in Corning, AR. He was one of eight born to William Gerald and Norma (Lane) Hicks. He was raised on a farm as a kid. His mom started his love of music when she taught him how to play the guitar. His family moved to the Rockford area when he was the age of seven. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball and continued to play into adulthood. Married Carol Godfrey on April 18, 1964. Garland’s working career spanned from Electrical Engineering to Custodial work with Harlem School District where he retired from in 2007. Garland and Carol were true soul mates who were always together and enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. She predeceased him on March 15, 1997. His love of music and singing led him to sing karaoke with friends he met along the way. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
Survived by his daughters, Kimberly (Carl) Davick and Melinda (Scott) Thompson; grandchildren, Anika and Soren Davick, Benjamin and Amanda Thompson; siblings, Erma Faye Eldridge, Gordon (Glonda) Hicks, Alma (Bud) Smith, Berneice (William) Oxner; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Carol; infant sister, Alta Marie; sisters, Geraldine Price and Wilma Crow.
