Herbert Charles Carlson, age 79, of Rockford, Illinois passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026. He was born November 9, 1946 in Rockford, Illinois to Elmer and Naomi (Wilson) Carlson. Herbert graduated from Rockford East High School. He went on to work as a film editor when the movie theatres used to use real film, worked for years as a custodian at Swedish American Hospital, and became in independent caregiver in later years. He married the love of his life, Nancy Page, on September 8, 1990.
Herb was a huge film buff, he enjoyed watching 16mm especially with his friends at the Rockford Film Club where they would meet monthly to watch films together. He collected records and film. He enjoyed reading, mostly science fiction. He met author Ray Bradbury decades ago in California and Ray would send Herb Christmas cards. He liked going inner tubing with Nancy. Herb was a devout believer in Jesus Christ and a member of First Baptist Church in Rockford, IL.
Herb is survived by his wife of 35 years, Nancy Carlson; sister, Pam Ducharme; nephew, Nicholas Ducharme; and cats, Starlet and Miss Kitty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Naomi Carlson; brother, Stephen Carlson; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A visitation for Herb will be held on Friday, July 24 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, 5304 Charles St., Rockford, IL 61108. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Entombment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
