

Lonnie L. Nelson, 61, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, March 17, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born July 9, 1964 in Rockford, the son of Roland and Barbara (Allen) Nelson. He graduated from Jefferson High School, class 1982. Lonnie was a dedicated employee of Sunset Memorial Gardens and Willwood Burial Park for over 37 years prior to retiring. He enjoyed fishing and watching sports, especially the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. Lonnie loved listening to music and relaxing while smoking a cigar. He adored being "Big Grandpa" to his grandchildren, Monte, Cherokee and Shiloh. Lonnie was an amazing cook; bacon wrapped jalapenos being his specialty. He loved the 4th of July. He enjoyed being social and spending time with his family and friends. Lonnie is greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
Lonnie is survived by his children, Sabrina (Cody) Gentry and Ciarra (Justin Woolwine) Nelson; grandchildren, Monte, Cherokee and Shiloh Gentry; best friend and caregiver, Gina (Steve) Niznik; sister, Wendy (Matthew) Chingren; nieces, Casey and Mataya; step-mother, Lonna Nelson; as well as many friends, especially his fishing buddy, Joe Hitch and Lonnie's brother from another mother, Steve "Moose" Hiner, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brother, Dean Nelson.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2026 at Advantage Funeral Home, 7000 W. State St, Rockford, IL 61102 with a funeral service to begin at 6:00 p.m., officiated by Chaplain John Senter. A burial will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at Willwood Burial Park, Rockford, IL.
