Marlena Mae Larson, daughter of Russell C. and Violet T. Risley Larson. Born Dec 1, 1937 in Rockford. Passed away Feb 21, 2025 at home, in Rockford. A 1955 East High School graduate. Marlena was married twice. Her first marriage to Jean K. Hunter Nov. 2, 1957 in Rockford; her second marriage to John “Jack” E. Grenke, Aug. 10, 1963 in Rockford. He died June 1984. Marlena had a variety of interests throughout her life. As a young woman she graduated from Flight Attendants school in Minneapolis, MN but never had the opportunity to use that skill in the air; Instead she channeled her energy into her marriage and family of 4 children, Cynthia, Russ, Tresa, and Jalene. Marlena had the gift of gab and creativity that people loved about her. Some of her extra-curricular activities included Bowling, Bingo, Card playing, Square Dancing, selling Avon, Home Interior, Paradise Jewelry; a true salesman at heart. A love of animals made a close connection with Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary; fostering many animals, welcoming many into her home, always working the P.R. avenue to bring attention to her favorite organizations. Hoo-Haven was another favorite organization she supported, along with the owners, Steve and Karen Herdklotz. Marlena and her late husband “Jack” Grenke, were one of many that provided labor, photography, and public relations for her step-uncle, Robert Stone’s, weekly newspaper, The Rockford Journal. In her later years, she worked for the state, providing rides for seniors. And holidays, boy did she like holidays! It would be hard to choose between Halloween or Christmas as a favorite; both were highly regarded. And then there was Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and New Years! While she could be “cranky” at times, she could be described as feisty, with a wicked sense of humor. She was lucky to enjoy her 6 grandchildren, Zach, Karissa, Brandon, Ryan, JR, and Sami; and an added bonus of 2 great-grandchildren, Adaline & Carson. She was a master of search and find. If she knew you collected something, she would keep a lookout for you. The pieces of her life were many and varied and fulfilling. She has now joined her parents, her husband, and many dear friends that have passed before her. R.I.P. Marlena. I can hear the groans and swells of laughter right now.
A celebration of Marlena’s life will be held June 7, 2025 at Ken-Rock Community Center on Adams Street from 2-5 pm. Please stop by and share a story about Marlena. Or just stop to say “Hi” to the family. Cremation rites were accorded. Burial in Willwood. Donations in her memory to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, Hoo-Haven, and Ken-Rock Community Center are welcomed.
