Glenn Calvin McFarland July 2, 1932 – February 28, 2018
Glenn C. McFarland, age 85, passed away peacefully in Roseville, CA on February 28, 2018. He was born on July 2, 1932, in Wyandotte, Michigan to Ernest BrennemanMcFarland and Esther (Pilot) McFarland.
Glenn attended school in Wyandotte and was active in the student council, the school orchestra, and played varsity basketball. He attended Albion College where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and played in the college band and orchestra, graduating in September 1954 with a BA in Economics. In November 1954 Glenn enrolled in the United States Navy Aviation Officer Candidate Program, attending flight training in Pensacola, FL and went on to be Commissioned Ensign and later was appointed to Lieutenant. From April 1957 to March 1959 Glenn served with Attack Squadron Two Hundred Fifteen at Moffett Field in California. He served a tour of duty in the Far East aboard the USS Lexington and later served as a Lieutenant in the Reserve of the US Navy. Throughout his life and while in the service, Glenn had a musical ear and played the jazz trumpet. While commissioned at Moffett Field, he met Dorothy Horne who came to work in Palo Alto, CA following her graduation from University of British Columbia. They soon became engaged and married in Lethbridge, Alberta on September 12, 1959.
Following his work in the Navy and as a Marketing Manager in Portola Valley, CA, Glenn and Dorothy moved to Portland, OR, where they welcomed their first child, John, in 1962. Glenn’s work brought the three to Tustin, CA where they welcomed a second son, Craig, in 1968. In 1969 they moved to Sunnyvale, CA where they lived for over 40 years. Glenn was active in his sons’ sports activities and the Toastmasters. Glenn and Dorothy retired in Roseville, CA to be closer to their two grandchildren, Kevin and Emily. Dorothy passed away on August 18, 2015. Glenn mourned the loss of his loving wife of 56 years and spoke often of how much he missed her. Glenn was determined to enjoy an active life, becoming involved with new friends in a daily coffee group of neighbors, actively walking and tracking his steps, attending his grandchildren’s school and sporting events, and visiting with his family. He was an avid reader. Glenn even returned to playing music in 2016, taking piano courses, revisiting his favorite Jazz tunes, and discussing his love of music and its creation and performance with his sons and his lifetime friend Joe Valentine.
Glenn is survived by his sons; John R. McFarland and his wife Sandra and two grandchildren Kevin and Emily of Granite Bay, CA, and son Craig S. McFarland and his wife Christen of Alameda, CA, and life-long friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy (Horne) McFarland and three brothers, Nelson, Neal, and Wayne.
