He was born in Portland, Maine on December 8, 1935 a son of Berton and Clara (Lawler) Campbell.
Clayton attended St. Athanasius School and was a graduate of Mexico High School Class of 1954, and later attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, graduating in 1960.
He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1958.
Clayton was employed for many years with the Rumford Paper Mill. He was a member of the Elks, the American Legion, and the VFW.
Clayton was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.
Surviving are his daughter Nina Langervin and husband Dan of Dixfield; stepsons, Randy Brown and wife Mary of Rumford, and Buddy Brown of Rumford; a sister Jeanette M. Dunfey and husband Robert of Portsmouth, N.H.; best friend Ruth Theriault of Mexico.
He was predeceased by his parents.
