Mexico: John Elliott Freeman, 92, long term resident of Byron, recently moved to Mexico, died at home surrounded by family on September 9, 2021. He was born on Feb. 12, 1929 in Rumford, son of Walter Otis and Grace (Elliott) Freeman. He attended Stephens High School and served in the US Navy aboard the USS Fargo.
He married Hattie Hodgson on June 3, 1950. John served several years as Selectman of Byron, volunteer fire department, and on the school board. John retired from “the Mill”. He was a member of Parish of the Holy Savior Church. John was an avid sports fan and huge supporter of all his kids’, grandkids’, and great grandkids’ teams.
He is survived by his wife; 8 children: Linda (Doug) Doerr, Susan (Russ) Hayden, Judy Freeman, Cynthia Freeman, Walter Freeman, Diane (d. Mike) Sandusky, John Freeman, and Melody Sanborn; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Gertrude Martin and Anna Shaw.
He was pre-deceased by his infant son “Baby Boy”; his parents; his brother, Philip; and his great-granddaughter, Brook Freeman.

Visitation Thibault Funeral Home Wednesday 9/15 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday 9/16 at 10 AM at Parish of the Holy Savior Church, Rumford. Burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr. Augusta.
