From late summer and into fall of 1940 many of the area’s young men enlisted in the 103rd Regiment of the Maine National Guard, with the knowledge that the 103rd would soon be “called up” for a one year tour of duty with the US Army. On February 24, 1941, the 103rd was mobilized and inducted into the US Army 43rd Infantry Division.
