Bangor, Maine - Margaret LeVasseur Deane, 92, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025 with her daughter by her side. She was born in Rumford, Maine, June 2, 1932, the second eldest of five daughters of the late Noel and Clemence (Legere) LeVasseur.
She grew up on Waldo Street in Rumford, ME and spent the majority of her life in that area. After graduating from Stephens High School in 1950 she worked as a secretary at Oxford Paper Company. Through friends, she met the love of her life, Philip Deane, and they were married in 1955. Sadly, Phil died only three years later. She never remarried, instead dedicating her life to raising her two young daughters. Once her daughters started school, she worked at Carey’s Oil Company and later for the Town of Rumford. She was treasurer of St. John Guild, a member of St. John’s choir and volunteered for the Senior Center. She spent her free time getting together with friends, captaining a bowling team, staying active swimming, making puzzles or knitting.
She enjoyed traveling with two of her sisters and brother-in-law. Destinations included France, Ireland, Oberammergau in Germany, Alaska, the Grand Canyon, Florida, and New Brunswick. A favorite destination was Prince Edward Island, visiting five times in her seventies with her daughter, sisters and nieces. Petting goats and deep sea fishing were firsts for Margaret. An annual summer family vacation in Old Orchard Beach was a highlight, where you often found her playing with her grandson on the beach.
The last four years of her life were spent living in Bangor, Maine, wanting to be closer to her surviving daughter and grandson. Margaret enjoyed exploring Central and Downeast Maine with her daughter, Andrea, especially the coastal regions. Lunch with her grandson, Phil, was always a treat and often culminated with a rousing game of cribbage. Cribbage was a favorite card game of hers, and she initiated “The Cribbers” at her residence in Bangor, Boyd Place. She made many dear friends in her four years of living there.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband of three years, Philip P. Deane, and her daughter Philis Deane Wickens. Surviving are her daughter Andrea (Beth Deane) Turmelle and her husband, John, her beloved grandson, Philip J. Turmelle, and sister Vivian Roy and her husband James and seven nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sisters Gabrielle LeVasseur, Theresa and her husband Robert Poirier and Bernadette and her husband Maurice Belanger.
Family and friends may attend a visitation at 11:00, followed by a Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 12:00pm at Thibault Remembrance Center, 250 Penobscot Street, Rumford, Maine with a burial at Demeritt’s Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the National Association of Adrenal Diseases (NADF.us) or the American Diabetes Association.
