Rev. Raymond P. "Moots" Carignan

Father Carignan was born in Rumford, Maine on October 9, 1926, the fifth son of Willie and Anna (Cote) Carignan. Reverend Carignan graduated Stephen’s High School, Class of ’45. He graduated from the Illinois College of Podiatry and began his podiatry practice in Rumford, ME. “At my podiatry practice, people would confide in me and tell me all their problems, their aches and their pains and that surprised me… it was like being at church”. Ironically his podiatry career lead him to his lifelong calling with the church and the nickname “Father Doc” and he became the priest who switched from saving Soles to saving Souls.

As a Josephite, Reverend Carignan spent most of his priesthood in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Father Moots’ passions outside the church included travel, visiting all 50 states and over 50 countries. He always loved a good game of cribbage, football games and visiting Roxbury Pond, where he was the Grand Marshall of the annual 4th of July Parade. He served summers as pastor at St. Mary’s Chapel.

Reverend Carignan is survived by his brother, Dr. Roland Carignan and his wife Rachel of Dixfield, and is predeceased by his parents: Willie and Anna of Rumford, ME and brothers: Armand, Leo (Kiyo), and William (Chic). Additionally, Reverend Carignan is survived by generations of adoring relatives and friends, all of whom count themselves lucky to have had an “Uncle Moots” in their lives.
