John has been in our family prayers for a long time now.  My family was very sad when I told them the news last night.  We will continue praying for John's family to have strength during this difficult time.

Oh! Lisa,I just heard about John in church on Sunday. I am so sorry for your loss.  I lost 2 of my sisters, my brother and my parents to cancer and know what a heartbreaking disease it is.
Please accept our condolences.

Lisa, Claudia, Sylvia - Mom had notified us that there would be a time we could share after the funeral services, if we were able. So I prepared a few thoughts - thinking I probably wouldn't really be able to read them aloud - so I am thankful I can share them here with you.  I love you all.
 

We do not get to choose when or where we are born, we do not get to choose our parents (though John was fortunate in God’s choice in that) or how many brothers and sisters you will have to arm wrestle for the last piece of chicken!  
But we do get to choose how to live our lives.  
John chose to live a life of serving and loving others.  He invested himself in his marriage putting Lisa first above all other human relationships, in loving and raising his beautiful daughters well, in his many friendships and all of his family.  The sea of witnesses here today is a testimony to the life that John chose to live.
John chose a life of faith, trusting in God’s love for him even when it was hard to understand fully the plans God had for his life. 
There were several scriptures that came to mind in thinking of the faith that both John and Lisa have shown in their lives, but especially during the last two years.  This is one I’d like to read this morning.

2 Timothy 4:6-8
"For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."

I am thankful for the time God blessed our lives with the privilege of calling John my brother.  We love you, John, and will miss you.

I raised all eight of my children in Shrewsbury.  My daughter, Cathy, was in John's class.  I do remember Sarge and Mil.  They were so proud of their family.  We all agreed that Shrewsbury was a wonderful place to raise a family.  My prayers are for the family.  God bless you all.

Dear Lisa and family - I was in John's class at St. Michael's.  I met you at the reunion last summer.  I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. First I must say that John’s daughter Claudia wrote the words that I started with and foolishly invited me to add whatever I wanted.  So the theme of what I’m about to read is Claudia’s although I think she nailed who her father is.  Anything off color or otherwise in appropriate is from me.

John was born and raised here in Shrewsbury.  His state mates were Jeff, Lisa, and Chris.  State mates is sort of an Evers thing – maybe other families have a similar thing - but put simply for us Evers it means that your state mates were born in the same state as you. When your whole family moves a lot, state mates has some meaning.   Your whole life is uprooted when you move to a new state. Perhaps one of the reasons John was so devoted to his community is that he was always a part of it.

John was a state mate with the biggest and last group of Evers kids – Jeff, followed by John, Lisa and Chris are the Missouri state mates.  I think there is a little bit of a special bond between state mates in the Evers clan.  It doesn’t supercede the Evers family bond, it just forges a little stronger bond.

So John, along with his state mates, was born and raised here in Shrewsbury. John was an energetic child and very full of life.  Out of 11 children. John was the 4th brother and the 9th child.  He was an excellent student and he loved to play sports such as soccer, baseball, and basketball for his grade school, St. Michaels  (Just for the record, years earlier when I tried to play basket ball we were still pretty much trying to find out what the rules were and why the darn goal thingy was so far above our heads we could barely see it. It really didn’t seem like a good Catholic sport to many of my contemporaries but I’m a lot older than John so it just goes to show how things change.)

And John was an avid Boy Scout who enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting - - hobbies he chose to share with his daughters.  I’m not so sure he ever quite got the shopping thing, but that is why he and Lisa made such a perfect pair of parents. John taught what he knew and loved – nature – the out doors, and John accepted that Lisa had to teach what she knew and loved –culture, shopping, and nurturing.  Cleary God saw a complimentary match when he chose to unite these two souls in life.

John was captain of the Floretta bocce team and would wipe away all competition.  John was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion.  Truly John was his father’s son. You could see the best in Sarge Evers in most everything John did – he expected the best from himself and from you – no half-hearted effort was good enough.  And yet John demonstrated the best in Mom Evers too, a big, true heart is enough.  If you are true to yourself and your friends and loved ones then you are right with the world.  As a member of the Sons of the American Legion John was proudly the announcer at the hosted meat shoots.  John’s booming voice exposed his huge heart and made the event that much more fun for everybody.

John’s most recent job was with CL Smith.  All of his co-workers loved him so much.  After John’s diagnosis he still visited his coworkers as often as he could.  Obviously he loved them too and did not want a little thing like his illness get between him and those who were important to him.

John made many lifelong friends and adopted several other families as his own.  He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need no matter what time of day it was and he never expected anything in return. 

And John went out of his way to make sure his wife and girls were happy, as he believed his happiness came last.  John’s every word and action were selfless acts of patience, kindness and love.  Between you guys out there and me, we all know that any man who can live with three women and only two bathrooms is a saint with patience to spare.  

From the beginning of his diagnosis to the final moments of his life, John’s optimism “John are you okay, do you need anything?” – “I’m Fine” – John’s optimism and courage kept his family and friends strong.  Earlier on when his wife Lisa asked John, “Why us?” John answered without hesitation, “Why not us?”  For a simple Man’s man, John was a very deep human being and he didn’t need many words to demonstrate that depth.  His actions often said it all.

Extreme generosity and thoughtfulness - John expressed these in many different ways.  Some time ago when John was working on the addition to his house a family friend was getting married.  Unfortunately the couple’s new home was not ready to have permanent residents and needed a lot of work before anyone could move in.  John immediately stopped work on his home addition to help out his friends.  For four consecutive weeks John went over to their house to help them prepare it for their move in day.  He worked from the moment he left his work until midnight to help them be ready to move in.  John lived his life helping others, fortified by his belief that all people are good and deserving of his service.

John should and will be remembered for his happy disposition, his sense of humor, and his concern for others. He is an inspiration for all. 

Miracles do happen – John is a great example of that.   He lived 21 months longer than anyone ever thought.  After 4 months of shuffling with a walker, he woke one day and suddenly no longer needed it.  He was once again able to cut grass, drive, and even do work on the roof.  He continued to fill those next months with great times with his friends and relatives fishing and hunting, and just hanging out with those who loved him.  

There were many blessings and miracles throughout his illness. John trusted God, Lisa and his family, all of his family, and his friends, with every ounce of himself.  He was a fighter and we all could see it in him.  John never stopped smiling and living his life with and for his loved ones.  John will be fondly remembered and loved as a husband, a daddy, a son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend.

God bless you John, you have blessed us all.

It was a pleasure to know John plus, meet his daughter, Sylvia.
John met me while I was in Kenrick Seminary forest, at the lake with my friend Roxy.
As 12 year old boys often do, when they like a girl, they may punch them in the arm. Not John, to gain attention, he shot me in the tailbone with his BB Gun at that lake in Kenrick circa 1974. After a moment all was forgiven but, he had a good belly laugh in the meantime over the expression on my face. I could not believe what he did.
That was the John that I will remember most. Always ready for some fun and laughs and never, really, intending to hurt a soul.
RIP buddy, it's a shame that the good die young.

It is important to my family and myslef to express our depest condolences to the family of John. John was a major part of my childhood and i will always remmebr the famous pizza bread that he always made. My loe goes out to all brothers and sisters and to all relitives that this was a man that was a frien to everyone. I love you John, ill never forget you. I love you Lisa and love you kids.

Dear Lisa, Claudia and Sylvia,

I only recently learned of John's illness and was sorry to hear of his passing.  He was a special guy and one of my favorite brothers-in-law.  I believe anyone who loves to hunt and fish as much as he did has a special relationship with our Creator. Now John has the Master fisherman real handy to answer all his questions and teach him how to catch the really big ones!  ( I don't think the Lord allows stretching the truth there, however.)  Please know that while I am no longer a part of your family, you will always be in my heart and prayers, especially during the coming months of life in transition..

I don't think I ever saw John more proud and in his element than when he was playing with the girls or bragging on you three ladies.  I know you know how much John loved you and that you each will be comforted by the warm feelings that are generated by that knowledge.
