Stanfill, Martha Marie (nee Newberry), passed away at home on December 17, 2015. Loving wife of Charles E. Stanfill; Loving mother of Leslie Stanfill and Nancy (Joe) Leonard; Loving grandmother of Jack Charles McCarty and Piper Marie McCarty; Loving aunt, cousin and friend to many. Preceded in death by her brother Raymond and her sister Geneva.
Martha grew up in Granite City, IL., and graduated from Madison High School in 1952. Martha worked as a legal secretary at Illinois Law firm, Lueders, Robertson, and Konzen for 30 years. She then worked in the guidance office at Francis Howell High School, and later at Union Electric. She was a creative and enthusiastic Girl Scout leader, and an active member of United Church of Christ in St. Charles, where she volunteered in the nursery, was a counter for 10+ years, and participated in the Relay for Life team. She was a board member of the Women's Auxiliary at Barnes Jewish Hospital, and was a proud volunteer at Siteman Cancer Center, then at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.
Martha was devoted to her family and friends and had time to listen and lend support to anyone, whether it be by taking a walk around Francis Park, or just sitting and listening. She was always positive and full of energy - she could be found up early every day, drinking her coffee and watching the birds and squirrels. She always saw the bright side of things, and never let anything stop her. A feisty redhead with a quick wit, Martha had the uncanny ability to balance common sense with non-judgemental warmth; her compassion and ability to care was unending. Martha had a class and grace that was unmeasured, teaching her daughters to never leave the house without lipstick, yet she was the most down-to-earth, approachable face in a crowd. She was "Mom" to everyone. No matter how bad a situation, one could always count on hearing Martha say "This too Shall Pass." And she was right.
