James V Mooney

April 21, 1943November 24, 2018

James "Jim" Mooney age 75 of North St. Paul died November 24, 2018. The second oldest in a family of singers, Jim had a fine voice and could often be heard singing along with his radio. He especially liked the Golden Oldies. His siblings used to rib him about those songs to which he would reply, “At least I know all of the lyrics,” which he did. In addition to lyrics, Jim had a mind for statistics, especially sports statistics. He was nuts about all sports, but baseball was his favorite. The Twins could not have had a more devoted fan. Card games, too, excited him. He played cribbage every day, often against his mother, who was no slouch, even in her old age. In his youth, Jim attended Blessed Sacrament School and was a member of the Johnson High School Class of 1961. During summers Jim and several of his brothers caddied at the Hillcrest Golf Club, where he was known as Brother Moon, a reliable caddy. After high school Jim joined the Navy and trained to be a cook. He spent most of his eight years in the Navy aboard the USS Independence, part of the Mediterranean Fleet. When he talked about that time, he spoke glowingly about some of the ports he visited, but always emphasized the beauty of the sunsets off Corfu.Near the end of his last tour, Jim was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis (NF), a disfiguring neurological condition. Despite the suffering the disease caused him, Jim never complained. In civilian life he earned a certificate in culinary science from Dunwoody Institute. Later he got a bachelor’s degree in business administration from National College of Business. For many years Jim was a warehouse manager. Jim loved children and was a popular uncle to his nieces and nephews. He died at the age of 75 and will be sorely missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ora (Ward) Mooney. He is survived by ten siblings: Kathleen Svendsen, Brian, Jeffrey, Maureen, Philip, Paul, Bruce, Elizabeth Morcos, John, and Kristin. A memorial gathering will take place on Friday, December 7 from 5PM to 7PM at Wulff Funeral Home, 1485 White Bear Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55106. Burial will be private. Contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to Children’s Tumor Foundation (

Even though Jimmy was quite sick for the last three months I was able to spend a lot of time with him talking or just being there while we watched TV. He had endured many hours in a few hospitals with little complaining. I will especially remember when I was a child and he would come home on leave from the navy. I was so happy to see my big brother. His arrival made Christmas so much more fun! His death has been a great loss for our family but our memories of Jimmy will get us through. Love, Liz
