Swanhild Eugenia Anderson, Valley View Care Center of Owatonna, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, July 21, age 107 years old.
Swanhild was born Oct. 9, 1912 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Daughter of James Petrie from Liverpool, England and Selma Lybeck Petrie from Oslo, Norway. Swanhild graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul, Crawley Teachers Training Department, and Minot, North Dakota Teachers College. She taught in rural schools in North Dakota, where she met and married Maurice James Anderson in 1935. She also was a substitute teacher in Northern Minnesota. She was involved in PTA, and was president of McClellen Elementary School and Washington High School in St. Paul. Swanhild was a member of Eastern Star for 80 years. She is a life member of Oriental Chapter #187 of St. Paul. She served as Ruth in 1932. Swanhild led an exercise class in St. Paul for many years and was given an award from the city. She has done beautiful embroidering and crewel work and won 1st prizes at the Minnesota State Fair. Until the last couple of years, she loved embroidering dish towels for the Senior Place in Owatonna.
Swanhild is survived by two daughters, Patricia Willhite of Owatonna, Sarah and son-in-law, Glen Lenker of Middletown, Pennsylvania, a son-in-law, Gerald Edstrom of Woodbury, MN, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Maurice, a daughter, Aida Edstrom, son-in-law, George Willhite, 2 sisters Grayce Schjolberg and Hazel DeVine and 2 brothers, Ronald and Chester Petrie.
Services will be held at Wulff Funeral Home in St. Paul with Pastor Brent Carlson on Tuesday, July 28 at 11:30 a.m.
