Dear Pam and Matt.   We have been trying to get in touch ever since we found about about your loss but have been unable to. While very late, please know we both are very sorry for your loss and hope your memories of all the good times you had make bearing the loss a hint easier. Thinking of you and hope to connect.

There is nothing I can say about this day except, "I love you”. When I replay the day in my head, I remember the call and the words, “Josee is gone”. Still hard to hear or recognize. I can’t imagine how it must feel as a parent or a brother to carry that loss. I also remember the bravery and strength of character in you all, and especially of Korben, who was there by your side when you called. What an amazing man Korben is to stand tall there in that day. It’s a fresh wound. I still cannot understand. It still aches and is scarred and the nerves are still raw.  This past year has been challenging, emotional, exhausting, and murky. But She, Josee, was not murky at all. She was alive and clear and full of spirit and the brightest light in the room. And, that is how I remember her. My wish for you all: Matt, Pam, and Korben is to remember that light and keep it with you and strive harder and live harder and shine brighter. Because I need you in the world and we, our family, needs you all in the world. We love you.

We are both shocked and saddened at the news of Josee’s passing. We remember her as such a bright, free spirited, intelligent and creative young lady, who always filled the room with her brilliant smile. We cannot imagine the pain and loss you must be feeling.

My daughter rides for Boulder Junior Cycling, and though we did not know Josee, her beautiful, kind spirit and skills as a rider are evident from  comments by those who knew her and loved her,  and we can see the positive impact she made on so many, and her spirit will live on in them. We are so sorry for your loss.  I have so many memories of Josee from BJC.  Sitting on the back of Katey’s car catching up before practice, driving her and Korben home from Lyons and listening to them talk about their world, her general sense of curiosity and joy . . . There are so many things I loved about her.  It always made me smile watching her interact with other kids before practice.  She had a way of making people feel noticed.  I hope somewhere, somehow she feels the outpouring of love people have for her, she realizes what an incredibly lovely human she was and how deeply her presence in this life will be missed.

Pam, you and your family have been in our hearts these past days.  It has been a gift to read here the many joyful remembrances of Josee!  What a beautiful soul she must have had, and a light to those around her.   We are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I will never forget the intense love my brother had for his first child, the only daughter of her generation. Josee, like Wendy & the Lost Boys, the bold leader, charging ahead, blazing the trail with her brother and 4 male cousins in tow, Korben, Brandon, Stone, Ryan, & Cedar. Her pure zest for adventure was contagious. An animal whisperer from early on. Her smile and sparkling eyes lit up a room. I’ll never forget the bond I saw with her and her brother Korben, reminding me of Matt & myself. A life lost is always sad, but a life lost too young is unfathomable. To Matt, Pam & Korben, we are thinking of you daily and look forward to a time when we can embrace in tears and hugs and, eventually, soldier on. Much love from our family. Josee will continue to be a bright light shining in our hearts forever. 

My memories are of laughter, a bike riding gorilla, falling during bump n’ thump, and jumping in ice cold creeks. They are of a outgoing and charismatic personality that wasn’t afraid to say what she thought, and would stand up and be strong for what she believed in.  

I remember a natural teacher, a friend to all: she drew people to her, and often had them in fits of laughter.  A complete pleasure to coach and a kind and caring team mate, Josee brought happiness and joy to a lot of people.

Thank you for being part of my life.  You will be missed.

I had written a poem about Josee a couple years back and I would like to share it. It is called Her for You.

No one can really explain who or what she is, but they can tell you about the things she does. She stares into space, never thinking or worrying about the present but always about the future. She notices the little things most do not, and she cherishes them like no other. Even in silence she laughs, like a whisper in the dark, calling to other people, trying to make them happy. She runs her hand along the walls of her house, of her school, and the things around her, like she's trying to memorize the feeling so she doesn't forget the feeling of the places she has been, the feelings she felt, the people she met. She doesn't like things for just what they're, but for what they're a combination of. She almost never thinks of herself, always worried about making other people feel accepted, happy, and heard. She doesn't accept pain from others towards herself or towards others. She seems over protective like a mother, and we all take it for granted, but one day, one day deep down we are going to want her protection from the pain of the world, her comfort to heal you from all your pain, and her smile to ward off all the sadness of your life. She seems weak and punny, but the more you get to know her the more you realize she is strong, stronger than you, she gets insulted for her actions, her looks, but no she doesn't let it get to her she looks upon the pain and stands strong, strong like a stone, and you realize deep down you love her, either as a brother, as a sister, as a parent, as her lover, or as a friend. And for all these reasons you can't stay away from her, you feel attracted to her, and for that reason she stays the same person just for you. And you love it. And you love her.

Josee was a shining star who loved her family and her family loved Josee.
