Charles "Charlie" Elwood Matthews

Charles “Charlie” E. Matthews, 85, of Eden passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. Born in Crisfield he was the son of the late Elwood and Ruby Matthews. Charlie was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean War as a Paratrooper and was a member of the American Legion Post 64 and was a past Captain of the VFW Muese Post 194. He spent his entire life as a truck driver traveling over 4 million miles during his career delivering products throughout the United States. He enjoyed going to McDonalds to meet with his friends for coffee and chat on a daily basis. Along with his faithful companion, Flora Vickers, they traveled on many cruises and visited Mexico and many Caribbean Islands. He is survived by his companion, Flora Vickers; his faithful dog, Sam; his sister, Emily Sterling of Crisfield; niece, Diana Johnson and her husband Calvin of Marion; two sons, Jim Matthews of South Carolina and Ronnie Matthews of Whaleyville; several grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Matthews in 2004; son, Charles Matthews, Jr. of Colorado; sister, Gladys Laird; and granddaughter, Alicia Matthews. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 12pm at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow in Springhill Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Charlie to the Wicomico County Humane Society, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, MD 21804.
