Debra “Debbie” Messick Layfield, 69, of Salisbury passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Deer’s Head Hospital Center. Born April 17, 1956, in Salisbury she was the daughter of Gladys Lee Smith Messick and the late John Thomas Messick, Jr.
Debbie graduated in 1976 from Wi-Hi. For many years she worked at English’s Grill in Salisbury Mall and most recently at Trinity Sterile for 20 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend who enjoyed spending time with her family.
In addition to her mother Gladys, she is survived by her husband, almost 45 years, Dale R. Layfield, Sr.; son Dale “Buddy” R. Layfield, Jr.; daughter, Kelly M. Layfield (Bo Parsons); two grandchildren, Riley and James Parsons; sister, Penny Tracey, Diane Burke (Ronnie), Sharon Jones (Steve); brother, John Messick, III; mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Layfield; sister-in-law, Deborah Laird (Robert) and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, John Thomas Messick, Jr. she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Marshall and Lillie Smith and John and Ethel Messick; and father-in-law John “Jack” Layfield.
A graveside service will be held Monday, August 18, 2025, at 11am at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury. Pastor Danny Travers will officiate. The family requests everyone one dress casually for the service.
The family would like to thank everyone at Deer’s Head hospital for the care and compassion shown to Debbie during her transition in her final days. Especially the staff, doctors, and nurses on S1 and the Whispering Willow Department. A special thank you to Ben, Thomas, Jamie, Julie, Dr. Aye, and Dr. Coker.
