Jim was the son of the late Bright M. Carper and Dorothea V. Carper. Jim was born in McLean, VA and raised on his family’s dairy farm.
Jim attended Fork Union Military High School and Hampden- Sydney College. On January 9, 1960, he married Marcia Anne Carr. In 1970 Jim was employed by General Tire and relocated with his family to Salisbury, MD. Jim later worked in real estate for Ahtes and Hanna. Jim also owned and operated Super Clean Car Wash for many years. After retiring, Jim found immense joy working at the Hideaway Farm where he was a member of the Hideaway Hunt Club. Jim was a long-time member of Green Hill Yacht & Country Club where he thoroughly enjoyed many rounds of golf. By his golfing friends, Jim was fondly known by the nickname of “Long Ball.” Jim always cherished his daily chats about golf and the carwash business with his dear friend, Mitch Wyatt. Jim also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, Jim developed a passion for Drag Racing and was the proud 1994 champion at US 13 Dragway.
Jim is survived by his children, Chip Carper (Marguerite), Susan O’Flaherty (Phil), Carren Cooper (Todd), and Kristen Wheatley; Grandchildren - Whitney Collins, Sarah Howard, Chad Cathell, McKinsey Venable, Chase Cathell, Jack Wheatley, Aidan O’Flaherty, Mairin O’Flaherty, Will Cooper, and Todd Cooper Jr along with fifteen great-grandchildren. Sister in laws, Catherine Cloud, Danielle McCauley (Steve), and Rusty Ehmann.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marcia Carr Carper, several aunts and uncles.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with family visitation at 10am and service at 11am at Rockawalkin Church, 6777 Rockawalkin Road, Hebron, MD 21830. Rev. Steve Hands will officiate. Food and fellowship immediately following at the Elks Lodge 817, 401 Church Hill Ave, Salisbury, MD.
