

Armando Chavez Aguirre was born on August 20, 1925, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Refugia and Jesus Aguirre. He was a graduate from Sidney Lanier High School in 1943 and joined the US Marines on December 1, 1943. He served honorably in WWII as an armorer, aircraft radar operator. He received an Honorable Discharge on April 27, 1946. In his professional life, he began his career at Kelly AFB, and worked as an inventory management specialist until he retired in 1986.
Armando, was active in various organizations throughout the years. He was a member of the San Antonio Amateur Softball Association for many years and became a lifetime member. He had a love for softball and coached city league teams, with his son, Ray, playing alongside him for 35 years. He coached teams like La Union Rebels and Alamo Radiator Rebels. He looked forward to the beginning of each season and won many championships in the city leagues. He had a passion for boxing, football, and first and foremost, basketball. He was an avid fan and a season ticket owner of the ‘San Antonio Spurs’ from 1994-2009.
Armando, was also a member of the VFW 8936 and was an active participant in all aspects of the organization. He made many lifelong friends from this group. He was also a member of the AFL-CIO. One of the organizations he really enjoyed and was very active in, along with his wife, Amparo, was the International Order of Alhambra. He participated in all the worthwhile charitable work the group was known for.
‘Pop’ (loving called by his children), left us peacefully, with his daughter Patti by his side in the comfort of his home Sunday October 4, 2015. He was 90 years old. The family is thankful to Diane Hernandez who was incredibly kind and generous of her time in helping his daughter Patti during the past 5 years of his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Amparo Aguirre, and his two adult children, son, Armando Ray Aguirre (wife Helen), and daughter, Patricia Marie Rendon. Granddaughters, Jennifer Aguirre Holmes, Misti White, Amanda Aguirre Carreon, great-grandsons Jayden Sisk, Darian Holmes, and Zion Jeremiah Aguirre-Carreon. He was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. We were raised in the greatest of homes, just a really great dad, and we will miss him so much. He was a good, kind, sweet, and loving man…Very faithful, always loved mom, and always provided for the family.
The family will be receiving guests at the funeral home on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. with a Rosary being recited at 11:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Ft., Sam Houston National Cemetery.
