

Audrey S. Benick, age 99, of San Antonio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. She was born August 24, 1917, in Eagle Pass, Texas, the oldest child of Ophie Brown Gerfers and Luis Almaguer Sotomayor. Audrey grew up in San Antonio and was a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of Brackenridge High School, class of 1936. After high school she attended business college and worked as a stenographer for a law firm. Following that, she was employed for 38 years at Fort Sam Houston as a transportation clerk for the Fourth U.S. Army.
She was a member of the Harlandale Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed square dancing, gardening, and various handicrafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, and her son, Clyde Benick, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Beverly Ewald and husband Ken; daughter Dianne Landrum, and daughter-in-law Jan Benick. She leaves 8 grandchildren: Joyce Janota and husband Charles Haile; Jeffrey Janota and wife Amy; Clyde Benick, III (Chip); Tommy Benick, Cindy Cooey and husband Billy; Patricia Oliver and husband Jeff; Michael Landrum and wife Jessica; and Leslee Landrum. Also 13 great-grandchildren: Clayton Janota, Alison Benick, Matthew Benick, Stanley Cooey, Sammie Cooey, Samantha Cooey, Jeffery Oliver Jr., Amanda Oliver, Gabrielle Landrum, Kaylee Landrum, Casidee Landrum, Jasmine Landrum, and Will Landrum. Also two great-great grandsons, Noah Aguilar and Nathan Aguilar, with another one expected in September. Audrey is also survived by numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation with the family at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 515 N. Main Avenue, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, followed by a funeral service at 12:00. Burial will be at San Fernando Cemetery Number 3 at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 22.
