

Betty Jane (Carter) Choffel passed away peacefully February 14, 2017. Betty was born in San Antonio October 3, 1926, to James and Florence Carter. She graduated from St. Gerard High School in 1943 where she was drum-major, and married Merle Choffel of Cochranton, PA, at St. Gerard Church in 1947, where they remained active for many years. She worked at Southwestern Bell and St. Gerard Credit Union. Recently she was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic church where she was in the choir, the Altar Society, and volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program. Some of Betty’s fondest memories include traveling to all 50 states in their motorhome, especially to Big Bend National Park. Betty’s passions included spreading bluebonnets, family time including games and puzzles, and a strong devotion to St. Gerard’s parish and her beloved alumni group. A beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, she was preceded in death by her parents, son James, and brothers James and Robert. Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Merle Leo, son Rick (Erika) of Irving, daughter Barbara Thurman of San Antonio, son Ken (Harriett) of Austin, daughter Susan (Jeff) of Chicago, and son John of Lake Travis; two sisters Mary Ann Houston and Dolly Hingst; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives. Betty and Merle are also proud to have sponsored the seminary education of Reverend John Sarath, a Catholic priest in India. Visitation will be at St. Gerard Church on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. A private burial will take place at a later date. Although the family appreciates floral tributes, they request instead that a memorial contribution be made in Betty’s name to St. Gerard High School, 521 S. New Braunfels, San Antonio, 78203.
