As a young man, Carlos and his family labored in the fields, harvesting crops ranging from cotton to apples. During this time, Carlos also worked alongside his father on painting projects and various odd jobs—experiences that would later shape his lifelong career.
Carlos joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served from January 23rd, 1957, to September 16th, 1960. Determined to enlist, he famously ate bananas to meet the required weight.
After completing his service, Carlos returned home, married his beloved wife of 66 years, Porfiria C. Medina, and began building both his family and his future.
Following ten years of experience with a painting contractor, Carlos founded his own painting company, which he owned and operated for nearly 40 years. Through his work, Carlos left a lasting presence across San Antonio and the surrounding communities. His craftsmanship can be seen in churches, community centers, schools, libraries, pools, housing subdivisions, historic neighborhoods, and numerous commercial properties. Over the years, Carlos employed many relatives and friends from the neighborhood—uncles, brothers, cousins, sons, and friends—creating a legacy of opportunity, mentorship, and pride.
Carlos was a devoted member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He and his wife raised their six children in the parish. In addition, to volunteering at countless church events, Carlos generously donated to the church and personally worked on additions and improvements to the St. Jude facilities. His faith was reflected not only in his generosity, but also in the time, skill, and care he gave to the community that meant so much to his family.
Carlos also loved music, singing, and dancing. He was a self-taught bajo sexto player who also dabbled with the accordion. Carlos played entirely by ear and never learned to read music, but you would never know it when he serenaded his wife and mother or played at family gatherings. Music was one of the many ways Carlos shared joy, love, and connection with those around him.
Carlos went home to be with our Lord December 26th, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Rosa Medina; his brothers, Luis, Ernest, Mike, and Danny; and his sister, Gloria.
Carlos is survived by his loving wife, Porfiria C. Medina; his six children and their spouses—Carlos IV & Terri, Cynthia & Richard, Curtis & Margie, Christopher & Lourdes, Corinne &
David, and Clark & Christa; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brothers Tony and Mark; and his sisters Rosemary, Linda, Josie, Peggy, and Nancy.
Carlos will be remembered for his strong work ethic, deep love for family, unwavering faith, and his lifelong devotion to God.
