He was born in San Antonio, Texas and lived most of his life as a grassland farmer and cattle rancher on the Elm Creek Family Centennial Homestead in Von Ormy, Texas. He was often self-taught in the pursuit of his ventures. He read extensively to learn the tools needed for successful construction of farm buildings, investments, and his Christian faith. He was dedicated to the care of his mother who was within months of turning 100 years before passing away at the farm. Due to Collis’ mobility issues later in life, Sunday television church services were very important--especially those of David Jeremiah and Joel Osteen. His senior health care needs were addressed and lovingly given for eight years by Maggie Tarin. Operation of the farm was generously overseen by neighbor Jim Kunz. Collis was a member of the Grand Lodge of Texas, Sons of Herman, Atascosa No. 379 and Alamo No. 44.
Collis was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph Markt and Margaret Barker Weir; aunts—Lucille Markt Lutter, Bobbie Barker, uncles--Sam (Dimples) Barker, Erin (Jerry) Barker, and first cousins--Judy Barker and Pat Barker. He is survived by his son Jeff (Sharon) Jost and first cousins --Tim (Elisabet) Barker, Larry (Denise) Barker, Nancy (Dale) Allen, Linda (Zachary) Bishop and their children.
