Esther Macias Arguello was born on September 20, 1920, to Jose Maria Macias and Maria Margarita Esparza. Her parents and siblings Joe Macias, Frances Garcia, Janie Villarreal, and Frank Macias predeceased her. As a youth she and her sisters enjoyed playing competitive softball. She met Eloy Arguello in school and for him it was love at first sight. She and Eloy were married in 1940 by father Carmelo Tranchese, an early civil rights advocate and role model for San Antonio Westsiders. She and late husband Eloy enjoyed many years together, especially on the dance floor competing with other dancers (notably with brother in law Bacilio and Mary Arguello).
They had six children: Jesse (Yolanda) Arguello, Jo (Steve) Sullivan, Eloy Jr, (Armandina) Arguello, Roger (Janie) Arguello, Sylvia Alvarez, and Lillian (Brad) McRae. There are 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and counting, and many nieces and nephews.
Esther was a faithful Roman Catholic whose daily prayers and hymns speak highly of her love of family and friends. She was an active PTA mother, a home room mother, an excellent seamstress, a Depression era survivor, and a loving wife and mother. Because of her long life experiences Esther learned to persevere during adversity, to preach patience and forgiveness, and to celebrate life. Her spiritual journey of love and happiness came from adhering to the eight Beatitudes, including Blessed are:
The poor in spirit
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
Those who are merciful
Those who are clean of heart Those who are peacemakers
For your reward will be great in Heaven,
We give a special shout out to father Javier of Yellow Roses Hospice who provided advice and comfort to mama Esther and family.
