James “Jim” Walter Hash, 79, passed away on September 27, 2026, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He was the devoted husband of Elizabeth “Liz” Hash, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.
Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, Jim was the son of Walter Hash and Martha Robinson. He graduated from Madison County High School in Madison, Virginia, in 1965, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Jim was a three‑sport Tri‑Captain his senior year, earning four varsity letters in football, two in basketball, and three in baseball. He was also a proud four‑year member of the Future Farmers of America.
After high school, Jim continued his baseball career at the regional level and was heavily recruited by John “Skeeter” Shelton, a legendary scout for the New York Mets and their rookie‑league affiliate, the Marion Mets.
Jim served honorably in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, completing his service as a drill sergeant at Fort Ord, California. Following his military service, he pursued studies in Business Data Processing and spent thirty-five years in data software management, software consulting and recruiting where he made a positive impact for the people he served. He culminated his professional career with Whole Foods as a Department Buyer Manager retiring in March 2013 where he was beloved by everyone he worked with, managers, coworkers, and customers alike.
Jim lived big. He enjoyed sports of every kind. He cherished his animals. He loved being surrounded by friends and family. And golf — well, golf was his kingdom. If he could have lived on the 19th hole, he absolutely would have. That was his happy place, his sanctuary, his comedy stage, and his confessional booth all rolled into one.
He treated everyone with compassion and dignity, no matter who they were. His humor was legendary — sharp, warm, and sometimes bold enough to make the Pope blush. But behind every joke was a man who cared deeply, who listened, who showed up, and who loved fiercely.
Jim is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his son James, his daughter‑in‑law Dorothea (Benzel), his grandchildren Nicolas, Andrea (Martinez), Rebecca, and Noelle, and his great‑grandchildren Violet and Maeve. His Sisters Helen (Chastin) Hawkins, Marie (Lohr) Welch and Jeanne (Hash) Buckner and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Larry Duke. He was predeceased by his stepfather Calvin Lohr, his father Walter Hash, his mother Martha Robinson, and his brother Ralph Chastin.
