John Edward Keil, 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a widower, to the love of his life, Ruth Ann Mowels Keil, who passed away July 15, 2018, at the age of 77. They celebrated 59 years of marriage together.
John was born September 29, 1937 in Shiner, Texas to Robert Frank Keil and Julia Macha Keil. He graduated from Patti Welder High (Victoria) in 1956 and was voted most likely to succeed! He met Ruthie & they were married February 14th, 1959. He worked for the Victoria County Mirror Paper while attending Victoria Junior College and then was accepted to the University of Texas School of Business in Austin. He graduated in 1962 with his B.B.A. During college he worked at the Austin American Statesmen.
John & Ruth moved to San Antonio where he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves, but then began his career as a certified public accountant as Ernst and Ernst. He then moved on to Kats Oil Co., J.H. Uptmore & Associates, The King Ranch and The Luckey Custom Feedlot. He also has his real estate brokers license. Throughout his career he held many titles including: Senior V.P., C.E.O., Board of Director, North Chamber of Commerce (San Antonio Chapter), National Assoc. of Accountants, and held memberships with the local C.P.A. Chapter and the American Institute of Accountants.
John has several hobbies, in his youth he built small gas engine model airplanes. He was an avid golfer, he held membership at Oak Hills C.C. and loved to play many different golf courses with his buddies. He loved road trips with Ruthie to New Mexico & Arizona. They spent most weekends with family and friends having dinner and play card games (Bridge, Gin & Poker). He did lots of fishing and hunting too. He volunteered at their church (St. Luke's Episcopal 1970s-mid 2000s) and served time on they vestry. He always helped Ruthie with projects at the Green Door Thrift Shop. They later attended Christ Episcopal Church for many years until their death. John was smart, witty, funny, loving, kind and always willing to help someone. He was loved & respected by everyone.
John is survived by his only daughter, Amy Keil Swan (Kevin) & his granddaughter, Kaylee P. Swan. She was his biggest joy in life! His younger brother Kenneth James Keil (Cindy), nephew Charles Keil (Brenda Ann), nieces Tamra Deas (Chris), Shannon Phillips (Matt), Joann Ridenour (Al), Suzanne (Chuck), and several great nephews and nieces. Also, so many friends that were considered family especially, Kellie Lewis (Rob). John had two siblings that passed in their infancy, older brother Robert Worth Keil and younger sister Karen Kay Keil.
Our family wanted to extend our deepest gratitude to his caregiver, Monica Cruz and family w/Nana's Touch, Thank you for being with him the past seven months and treating him like family, providing the best care and those wonderful home cook meals that he loved!
The family will have a private ceremony at St. Luke's Columbarium.
Celebration of Life is planned for a later date to honor John & Ruth Ann.
