Kenneth Wayne Mencey, passed away on May the 10th, 2021 at the age of 77. Mr. Mencey was born the first son to Sam Bradley Mencey and Annie Culberson Mencey on Christmas Day in 1943 in Graham, North Carolina. He rejoins his loved ones, father, and mother along with his younger sister Yvonne Mencey.
Mr. Mencey is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Maria Perez Mencey, two children: daughter Tammy Mencey Hernandez (David Hernandez) and son Kenneth Benjamin Mencey (Janie Mencey). He leaves behind his absolute pride and joy: four adoring granddaughters, Megan Nicolle Campbell, Tamarra Mencey Callahan (John Michael Callahan), Selena Marie Mencey, and Renée Angelica De Leon (Marcus Angelo De Leon) and two idolizing grandsons Dominic Jude Hernandez (Erin Noell Morgan), and Matthew Uriel Hernandez. He is also mourned by his four loving great-grandchildren: Cian Cassiel Campbell, Lydia Jane Mencey, Roselyn Antoinette Lopez and Katalina Audrielle De Leon. He is also survived by his brother Robert Mencey (Sherri Mencey) and sister Carol Mencey Prevo, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mencey was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Green Beret’s Special Forces Airborne unit as a Light Weapons Infantryman, Medical Corpsman (Special Forces), and Communication Specialist (Special Forces). There he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Parachutist Badge. Kenneth was extremely proud to have been a Green Beret; he always felt honored and privileged to have served in such a prestigious assemblage of warriors.
Mr. Mencey’s indomitable spirit encouraged his family and friends to persist in the face of many struggles. All who knew Kenneth loved him and knew him as “Welo”. Welo was adored and loved by all who knew him. There was nothing he liked better than an interesting conversation with a good (or new) friend. He could have an engaging conversation with anyone; his sense of humor could put anyone at ease, and he could take anyone’s bad day and turn it completely around by just being himself.
Mr. Mencey was a staunch supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the organization.
