I lived a life blessed by the love of many, many friends. Enriched by a variety of experiences, and graced with a gift to love others. My wish now for all of you who have in some way encountered me is this: grieve briefly, rejoice heartily.
My life began in Victoria, TX on January 31, 1945 with a very uneventful birth on the whole, but as a happy day for my parents and older sister, (Helen & “Mickey” Davis and Erin). All three have preceded me in death. Current surviving family members are the 2 sons of my sister: Robert and Glen Bailey; their respective wives, Linda and Ann, and four sons. But in an extraordinary unfolding of opportunity, a second family came into my young adulthood thru a deep friendship with a colleague and expanded from her to her mother, sister, husband and then the children, Christian and Chrissie, my goddaughter. This is Dorothy Wildenstein Le Pere and Bob Le Pere. Over 45 years they have been my family. Without them, my life would have been impoverished in so many ways with things that would not have given purpose to my life.
I graduated from Victoria High School in May, 1962, then attended Victoria Junior College, University of St. Thomas (Houston), and St, Mary’s University ( San Antonio), graduating with a BA in Philosophy in May, 1967. For A few years I entered Assumption Seminary in San Antonio in preparation for the Catholic priesthood in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Those plans changed and I directed my career planning toward social work, attending the Warden School of SS, OLLU and earning a MSW in May, 1975. My career as a Social Worker spanned 45 years. It has turned out to be one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences in my life. And here I turn to all of you with whom our paths crossed in my life: clients, other Social Work Colleagues, nurses, doctors, teachers, volunteers, community leaders, healthcare providers, advocates for the disadvantaged, etc. Additional source of comfort and sense of belonging has been my 25+ years at the Oblate School of Theology’s Memorial Chapel for Sunday Mass attendance.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel at Oblate School of Theology. If you do not already have a non-profit agency to make a donation to, please consider either the Oblate School of Theology or The State of Texas Kidney Foundation.
