Martha S. Garcia

September 9, 1936 - June 9, 2026

It is with somber hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Martha S. Garcia, who departed this world peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the age of 89, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on September 9, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas. Martha's life was a tapestry woven with compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to education and service. 

Martha was the beloved daughter of George C. Sanchez and Juanita Pizaña; who instilled in her the values of kindness and perseverance that would guide her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Garcia, and her beloved son, Marc M. Muniz, whose memories she held dear. 

A proud graduate of Fox Tech High School, Martha pursued her passion for education at Antioch University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Her dedication to nurturing young minds led her to join the Peace Corps, where she made a significant impact by helping to establish a school in Honduras and teaching local children. A testament to her boundless generosity and adventurous spirit. 

Martha's commitment to education and community service continued back home. She was an active member of the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) and devoted her time to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the Bexar County Detention Center. Her work touched countless lives by breaking down barriers and building bridges of understanding. 

Martha is survived by her loving family, who were at the center of her world: her brother, George Sanchez Jr; her daughter, Jill V. Garcia; her son, Joe John Garcia; and her grandchildren, Elisa O'Neal, Fredrick Miller, Matthew Miller, Joe Garcia II, and Michael Garcia. Her legacy continues through her precious great-grandchildren, Dakota Aguilera, Emyrah and Eralynn O'Neal. 

A visitation will be held at Roy Akers Funeral Home, 515 N Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205 on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 5:00p.m.- 9:00p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 6:00pm.

A mass in her memory will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, situated at 355 Sutton Dr, San Antonio, TX 78228.We will be departing from Roy Akers Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. The interment will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Martha requested that donations be made to the NAMI, Crisis Care Center, and Roy Mass organizations. Organizations that were close to her heart and reflect her lifelong commitment to mental health advocacy and support for those in need. 

Martha S. Garcia was a beacon of light in this world, whose legacy of love, education, and service to others will continue to inspire and guide all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those she touched.
