Mary Jane Hughes, born October 4, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas to Thomas and Myrtle Bernard. She graduated from Harlandale High School. Not long after graduating, Mary married and had 3 children. She raised them largely on her own and later, at the age of 40, she adopted her granddaughter and raised her as her 4th child. She was a true matriarch of her family and a force to be reckoned with, a determined woman who put family above herself. In order to support her small family, Mary Jane put herself through stenography school at night and secured a job working as a secretary for one of the Case Managers for the deaf at the Texas Rehabilitation Commission later known as DARS. During her years of service she eventually became a lead admin at the office and even taught herself sign language. Her communication skills were depended on to create accurate records and articulate the needs of her clients who relied on the support to get assistance with their education and employment needs. She loved to cook and often made family favorites, fried okra, the best pot roast, banana puddin’ and potato salad. Faith was very important to Mary Jane. Her family remembers her often humming or singing hymns like “The Old Rugged Cross” or “Victory in Jesus” while she washed the dishes, folded laundry or sorted mail. Her son Chris and daughter Christina along with her husband Jason were with Mary Jane Hughes as she passed away on February 28, 2025 at the age of 82 she was at peace and is now celebrating in heaven. .
