Refugia “Cuca” Bernal Perez closed her eyes to this world on April 23, 2016 so Jesus could open them in the heavenly Kingdom promised her at Baptism. Born in Eagle Pass to Pedro Bernal and Maria Martinez Bernal, she was the 6th of 8 children. Her parents and siblings preceded her in death. Cuca graduated from Main Ave. High School in 1937. In 1941 she married the only man she ever loved, Miguel S. Perez. Mom and Dad lived a life ruled by faith and family first and foremost. They loved us, fed us, clothed us, educated us, and gave an example for us to follow. Marriage is a sacrament, mom taught us. Enter into it seriously. Work on it constantly and you will have a happy and successful union. After 68 years together, dad passed away in 2009. Although broken hearted, she continued to live alone in her home as our beloved matriarch. In 2014 mom fell and became confined to a wheelchair. She spent her days in a nursing home until her death. She was very proud of her children for the education they completed, the careers they attained, the spousal choices they made and the children they raised by faith and example. Cuca is survived by Rose Mary (Valdemar) Perez, Miguel B. (Pennye) Perez, and Gilbert B. (Dottie) Perez; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Leo Veliz; and many more nephews and nieces as well as extended family and friends. The family will be receiving guests at Roy Akers Funeral Home on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Services will continue on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 350 Sutton St., with a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Resurrection presided by Fr. Eddie Bernal. Entombment will follow in San Fernando Cemetery II. Visit www.FunerariaDelAngelRoyAkers.com for online tributes. We found beauty in her life. Her presence cheered our hearts. May she rest in His loving arms. Alleluia.
