Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Sylvia was the beloved daughter of Concepcion and Ernesto Lavin. She grew up with a strong love for family and carried those values throughout her entire life. She was the devoted wife of Doyle E. Beilstein and a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor.
Sylvia dedicated much of her life to serving others. As a young woman, she worked alongside her family at the Yucatan Restaurant, where she made lasting memories and developed a strong work ethic. She was a proud high school graduate of St. Cecilia’s Academy. After her son, Steve, began school, Sylvia began her career with Northeast Independent School District as a teacher’s aide. She eventually retired from Olmos Elementary, where she was known for her caring spirit, dedication, and genuine love for the children she served. Proud of her Mexican heritage and bilingual abilities, Sylvia was affectionately known as part of the “Bilingual Machine,” speaking both Spanish and English with ease.
Retirement did not slow Sylvia down. She became a successful Avon representative, earning numerous awards and building lasting friendships along the way. She was a devoted parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where her faith was an important part of her life.
Sylvia was a woman who knew how to make people smile. She was famous among family and friends for her “Sylvia Special” salsa, her love of dancing, and her ability to bring laughter wherever she went. She loved being surrounded by family, listening to live music, cheering for the San Antonio Spurs, and spending time making memories. She especially enjoyed Snapchat and taking funny poses with T.J. Her makeup was always perfectly done, complete with her signature red lipstick. Sylvia had a wonderful sense of humor—even disguising her voice to have a little fun with spam callers.
Sylvia was also a Breast Cancer Survivor and a passionate advocate for women's health. She encouraged women to receive regular mammograms and practice self-breast examinations. Her story and advocacy were featured in Latina community magazines, allowing her to encourage and inspire others through her own experience.
Her love for her community extended beyond her family and church. For more than 20 years, Sylvia volunteered with friends at the San Antonio Conservation Society's Meatball Sandwich booth during NIOSA, creating memories while giving back to a community she loved. She also participated in several Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure walks in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
Sylvia's greatest joy, however, was her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Doyle E. Beilstein, parents, Concepcion and Ernesto Lavin; her daughter, Laura Bradley; and her siblings, Ernest Lavin Jr., Carlos Lavin, and Esther Dranowsky.
She is survived by her daughter, T.J. Teal and her husband, James; her son, Steve Beilstein; and her grandchildren, Kyler and Kolton. She is also survived by extended family members and countless friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, humor, generosity, and unforgettable personality.
Sylvia will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her love of family, her beautiful smile, her perfectly applied red lipstick, her dancing, her famous salsa, and her ability to make even ordinary moments memorable. She lived her life with heart, humor, and a deep love for the people around her.
Her favorite flower was the daisy, and her favorite color was royal blue—fitting reminders of the brightness and joy she brought into the lives of those who knew her.
Though she is no longer with us, Sylvia's laughter, love, faith, and countless memories will live on in her family, friends, and community. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
