Sylvia Hernandez Benavides, age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. She was the beloved wife of Alfredo Gutierrez Benavides, and together they shared 53 beautiful years of marriage—raising two children, traveling the world, and building a life filled with love and devotion.
Born on August 21, 1943, in San Antonio, to Aurelio Rodriguez and Leandra Bermudez Hernandez. Sylvia was the youngest of four children and grew up on the West Side of San Antonio, at 1109 Monterrey Street. She attended St. John Bosco Catholic School, San Fernando Catholic School, and Sidney Lanier High School.
In the 1960s, Sylvia began working at Santa Rosa Hospital in downtown San Antonio as a Sterile Processing Technician. She cherished her work, took pride in supporting her mother, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. During this time, Rock ‘n’ Roll dominated the airwaves, and Sylvia, with her infectious spirit, loved nothing more than dancing and singing along to her favorite tunes.
One night in 1962, at a lively two-story dance hall called “The Tourist,” Sylvia met Alfredo—the future love of her life. They began dating, but their relationship was interrupted in 1963 when Alfredo was called to serve in the U.S. Army. Five years later, in 1968, after his return from overseas, they reunited, and on May 6, 1972, they were married at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas.
Shortly after their wedding, Sylvia embarked on a new chapter—moving far beyond the West Side of San Antonio to Hanau, Germany, the first of eight military assignments her and Alfredo would undertake together. Over the next 20 years, their journey took them to Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Vicenza, Italy; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Polk, Louisiana; and finally, Kaiserslautern, Germany.
During these years, Sylvia devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family. Together, she and Alfredo raised their two children, Maria and Alfredo Jr. Rather than pursue a career of her own, Sylvia chose to be a full-time wife and mother. She poured her heart into caring for her family, especially her daughter Maria, whose complex needs became a source of deep purpose and joy in Sylvia’s life.
In 1992, after Alfredo’s retirement from the military, the family settled in Copperas Cove, Texas, in a home they had previously lived in during an earlier assignment at Fort Hood. Over the next several years, Sylvia supported her husband’s second career, watched her children grow into adulthood, and proudly saw her son embark on his own military path.
In 2004, Sylvia, Alfredo, and Maria moved to a new home in Killeen, Texas, where they would spend the next 15 years. Sylvia continued to dedicate herself to supporting Maria, ensuring she had access to the care and opportunities she needed to thrive.
In her late 60s, Sylvia began to show early signs of dementia. As her memory and cognitive abilities declined, her family—led by her devoted husband and children—rallied around her with unwavering love and care. In 2019, the family returned to San Antonio’s far West Side, reconnecting with their roots and extended family.
Though dementia clouded her later years, it could never dim Sylvia’s vibrant spirit. Her kind heart, warm smile, and loving nature remained constant. Her joy would still shine through, especially when she heard the Rock ‘n’ Roll songs of her youth. Even as the disease progressed, her quiet inner strength never wavered.
After a long and courageous journey, Sylvia passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a woman whose heart and spirit were the center of her family. Above all, her legacy is one of unwavering love—especially the tireless care and advocacy she gave to her daughter, Maria. After a long fulfilling life, the family takes comfort that Sylvia’s struggle with dementia is over and that she is finally at rest.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Alfredo G. Benavides; daughter, Maria H. Benavides; son, Alfredo H. Benavides; and grandson, Christian A. Benavides. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Henrietta Galvan, Carmen Hernandez, and Eddie Hernandez.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 551 N. Main Ave., San Antonio, TX 78205.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1321 El Paso St., San Antonio, TX 78207. Interment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
