Left to cherish his memories are son, Richard (wife Heather) of Austin; daughter, Paula (husband Randy Hawkins) and granddaughter, Morgan (husband Daniel Rester) of Lake Jackson; grandson, Joshua Hawkins of Madison, WI; granddaughter, Jenna (husband Hawkin Lolly) of Lufkin;
Paul Alan Meyer was preceded in death by his wife Carol Anne Meyer; father Paul Roland Meyer; mother, Gladys Pauline Meyer; brothers, Thomas H. Davis and Robert Dale Meyer.
Alan, born in the Hospital at the Harlingen Army Airfield (now Valley International Airport) , called Rio Hondo home his entire life, save a brief time when he lived in Mountainair, NM. Alan's father moved the family to Mountainair after WWII to dry-land farm pinto beans and to be closer to family. The farm failed after prolonged droughts and the family moved back to Rio Hondo, the home town of his mother. Later in life Alan took Carol to visit Mountainair to see were he had lived with his parents and meet some of the extended Meyer family still living there.
Alan and Carol met in High School; but they didn't start dating until after going on a hay ride at a Senior party. After High School graduation, he went to work for Sears as a salesman and made frequent trips to Denton to visit Carol while she attended college.
Alan and Carol married after Carol finished college. Alan continued his life long career in sales, now working for Freedom Newspapers at the Valley Morning Star and then later at the Brownsville Herald. He'd drive every day to Brownsville from Rio Hondo rather than move the family, he loved living in Rio Hondo and wanted his family to grow-up there too.
Alan had a successful career in advertising sales that allowed him to raise a family and then to retire comfortably with Carol. After retiring he turned that skill into a side hustle where he visited garage sales and flea markets, looking for bargains that he could trade or resell.
Alan had a passion for military history. He kept and read many books about the wars and conflicts in US History. He painted and assembled dioramas with miniature soldiers, model tanks and airplanes. A hobby he inspired his son Richard to take up and help him with.
He was an avid reader and an advocate for saving books. He became well known at many public libraries throughout the Valley. He'd gladly haul away any unwanted books destined for the dump by the pickup load. He'd bring them home, sort them, keep a few that might interest family and friends, and then redistribute the rest back to other libraries.
He will be greatly missed and forever loved by his family and friends.
