Rufus Edley Martin, Jr., known to everyone who loved him as Edley, was a one-of-a-kind man whose quick wit, sharp mind, and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Edley was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Gladys (Horton) and Rufus Edley Martin, Sr. He proudly served in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he made his home in San Benito, Texas, where he opened A to Z Brake Service, a brake shop that also offered lawnmower parts and repair. A talented mechanic, Edley had a gift for fixing just about anything, and there was very little he couldn’t figure out.
Edley was a rough-around-the-edges kind of man who lived life on his own terms. With a cigarette often hanging from his mouth, a quick joke ready to go, and never one to hold back a colorful word, he had a personality all his own. He had a remarkable memory for even the smallest details, a way of making people laugh, and a presence that was impossible to forget.
Those who knew Edley knew that beneath his tough exterior was a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back to someone in need and do anything within his power for the people he loved. He was more than a friend to many; he was a father figure, someone people could count on, and a man who showed his love through his actions. Above all, he was an amazing grandfather whose love and presence meant so much to his family.
Even after retirement, Edley could still be found sitting outside in his chair at the shop, staying close to the work that had been such a big part of his life. His mechanical knowledge was remarkable. He could listen to a lawnmower and tell you what was wrong with it, or look at a part and know exactly what it was for. He truly knew his craft, and his talent was something special.
Edley will be remembered for his humor, his mechanical genius, his sharp mind, his strong personality, and the love he gave so freely. He was not a conventional man, and he never needed to be. He was simply, unapologetically himself—and that is what made him so special. The memories, laughter, lessons, and love he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Edley is preceded in death by his parents Gladys (Horton) and Rufus Edley Martin; Siblings Robert Martin, John Arthur Martin, Acseay, Julia Tate, Sarah Lancaster, and Catherine Tinsley; and his great granddaughter Elizabeth Martin.
