Andy was born on January 13, 1952 in Evanston, IL to Lynn and Andrew Maduza. As a young boy, he grew up in Bull Valley, IL, Woodstock IL, and Lake Geneva, WI., graduated from Marian Central Catholic High School in 1970.
He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated in 1974 with a bachelors’ degree in accounting. The family explored the world together most recently fishing in the wilds of Manitoba where they had a very close encounter with a curious bear and her cubs!
After college, he and Carly returned to Illinois where they lived in Arlington Heights and Andy began his career at Arthur Young in Chicago, (following in his parents’ footsteps where they met). Andy also attained his CPA. This was the start of a career where Andy found success and made lifelong friends. His mentorship to many of these colleagues was pivotal for them.
Following Arthur Young, Andy worked at Brunswick as a Controller and completed his MBA at DePaul University. Andy continued his career in Sporting and Gaming at Bally in Chicago as a Director of Finance. In late 1984, Andy was asked to move to California and was promoted to the position of CFO for Life Fitness, a Bally subsidiary. He stayed with Life Fitness for the rest of his career and assisted with transitioning Life Fitness from Bally to the private equity firm, Mancuso and Company. He went full-circle in his career when Mancuso sold to Brunswick. Andy continued this work, serving on the board of Octane until it was sold in 2015.
Upon Andy’s retirement from the Board of Directors at Brunswick, he rekindled his passion in golf, practicing so vigorously that he won the Pepsi ProAm one year! Andy was an active community and church volunteer. He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral and most recently served as a Eucharistic Minister. Andy’s other church service was at St. Johns as a CCD teacher. He also volunteered by providing transportation for retirees from the Seacrest Village retirement home, working food service at the San Diego Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities fulfillment, St. James Church afterschool tutoring for elementary students, and Monarch School afterschool math tutoring high school students.
Andy loved all sports, horse racing, golf, football, ice hockey, and shared this passion with his family and friends. He was the Commissioner of two leagues in Fantasy Football and all participants loved his leadership of the leagues and waited for the weekend wrap-up where Andy usually displayed his great sense of wit and humor. After semi-retirement, he and Carly choose to move as close to the Del Mar racetrack as possible. In Encinitas and San Diego, Andy developed an interest in designing projects and maintaining his home and landscape.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Carlana Alsen Maduza, daughter Jaclyn of San Diego, brother Mark Maduza of Milwaukee, and sister Carolyn Maduza of Encinitas, CA.
