Andrew Jackson Hamilton, Sr., a distinguished Atlanta attorney, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family and the prayers of dear friends.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 8, 1941, Andy was the son of Frank and Nell Jo Hamilton. A proud Atlantan throughout his life, Andy embodied the values of integrity, faith, humility, and graciousness that defined both his personal and professional life.
Andy attended Marist School before continuing his education at Emory University. He later earned his law degree from Mercer University School of Law. Before beginning his legal career, Andy honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps, an experience that helped shape the discipline, strength of character, and sense of duty that marked his life.
Andy began his distinguished legal career with Neely & Player before going on to become a founding partner of Hamilton, Westby, Marshall, Antonowich & Anderson. Widely respected throughout the Atlanta legal community, Andy built a reputation as an exceptional attorney and trusted counselor. He was admired not only for his sharp legal mind, but also for his honesty, professionalism, and unwavering integrity. To all who knew him, Andy was the very definition of a Southern gentleman.
While Andy achieved great professional success, the center of his life was always his faith and family. A devoted member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Andy faithfully served as an elder for three terms and taught adult Sunday school for more than 30 years. His love for Scripture and deep Christian faith guided every aspect of his life. He found great joy in studying the Bible, teaching others, and building lifelong friendships within his beloved Heritage Sunday School class.
Andy was also an avid golfer, a passion that began when his father taught him to play at the age of seven. Over the years, golf became one of life’s great joys, especially the many rounds and retreats shared with dear friends from his Sunday school class. Whether on the golf course, in Bible study, or gathered around family, Andy treasured fellowship, laughter, and meaningful conversation.
More than anything, Andy loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, and a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and love. He cherished time spent with those he loved most and leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness, kindness, and enduring love.
Andy was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Johnston Hamilton, the beloved mother of his children. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Hildreth Hamilton; his sons, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, Jr. (Jason) and Robert Johnston Hamilton (Rob); his daughter-in-law, Shannon Lee Hamilton; and his cherished grandchildren, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, III (Jackson), Isaac Johnston Hamilton (Isaac), and Elliston Susan Hamilton (Ellie Sue).
Andy’s life was a testament to faith, integrity, service, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, church community, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched through his example of Christian devotion, professional excellence, and steadfast love for family.
Andy will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
His memorial service will be held on June 1st at Peachtree Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Covenant House of Georgia, where Andy served on the board for many years.
