She was born on July 30, 1933, near Statham GA in Oconee County. Barbara graduated from Bogart High School and attended the University of Georgia. Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She was admired for her generosity, her sense of humor, and her love of family. She had a passion for helping people, traveling, funny stories, and the Hallmark Channel. She never met a stranger.
Early in her life, Barbara enjoyed working as an administrative assistant at the First National Bank, the Georgia Highway Department and the Piedmont Hotel in downtown Atlanta. After having children and moving to Marietta, she led several committees of the Atlanta Golf Classic Tournament to support Egleston Hospital. Barbara co-founded the Chattahoochee Plantation Garden Club and the Atlanta Country Club Nine Holers. She enjoyed participating in the Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Association and women’s activities at Atlanta Country Club.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Hull and Chester Evans, and her sisters, Lois Evans Brawner and Mildred Evans Sims and her beloved husband of 52 years, James Edwin Choate, Jr. Survivors include son, James Edwin Choate III (Amy) of Atlanta, GA and children Edwin (Shannon), John, and Sally; daughter, Jyl Elise Choate (Taha Ozkan) of Marietta, GA and children T.J. and Barbie; and numerous loving nieces.
A graveside service will be held at Hebron Christian Church Cemetery, 2501 Hebron Church Road, Winder, Georgia on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 2:00 pm following CDC COVID-19 recommendations. Memorial contributions may be made at itsthejourney.org or georgiaworks.net.
