

Dr. Carl V. Hodges, age 97, of Sandy Springs, GA, died on June 30, 2011. Dr. Hodges was the husband of Gwendolyn Ulmer Hodges living at Savannah Court Assisted Living, 886 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, GA 30068. Mrs. Hodges is 97 years old. Also surviving are a son, Robert Hodges; daughter, Janet Hodges; daughter-in-law, Linn Hodges; three grandchildren, Andrew, Brian, and Carrie Hodges all of Atlanta; a sister, Laura Simpson of Charlotte, NC and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Hodges had a long and varied career in education. He had served as both president and executive director of the Georgia Education Association. After merger of G.E.A. and the Georgia Teachers and Education Association, he was named chief administrator of the new Georgia Association of Educators. He had served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Teachers Retirement System. The State Board of Education appointed him to several committees with responsibilities planning for Georgia public schools, including chairmanship of the Teacher Salary Committee and membership on the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Hodges had a career-long interest in improving the preparation and performance of teachers. He was active in G.A.E. and N.E.A. efforts to improve teaching and served on several committees of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. He initiated and promoted legislation creating the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Several of his summers were devoted to teaching in the Mercer University Graduate School of Education. In 1976, he was cited by the Georgia Teacher Education Council for achievements in improving teacher education. He received a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, a master’s degree from Duke University and a doctorate from the University of Georgia. Dr. Hodges was a high school teacher and coach, a college teacher, city school superintendent in Blackshear, Fitzgerald and Waycross and college administrator in Oglethorpe University. He was active in the life of his community. He had been chairman of the Sandy Springs Planning Council, chairman of Sandy Springs Clean and Beautiful, a member of the Sandy Springs Rotary Club, and the Sandy Springs Heritage Society. He also served on the Advisory Committee of the Atlanta Regional Commission. Dr. Hodges was involved in the work of the Baptist Church at the local and state level. Over the past forty years, he had taught Sunday School classes in the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, the Sandy Springs Baptist Church, and the Dunwoody Baptist Church. He had been a member of the Education Commission of the Georgia Baptist Convention and served on the Convention’s Executive Committee. The family will receive friends starting at 10:00 am, Monday, July 11 in the narthex of Dunwoody Baptist Church chapel, 1445 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at 11:00. Dr. Daniel Vestal will officiate with Dr. Mack Hannah, Pastor assisting. Interment will take place at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
