Catherine Spornick passed away on December 3rd, 2020 at the age of 63. She is survived by her two children, Nicholas and Anna, and also leaves behind her brother, Bob, and sister, Tish, in addition to a large family who dearly loved her.
Cathi was born November 8th, 1957 in Philadelphia, PA, where she was raised by Robert and Theresa Barker. She would attend St. Mary’s College in South Bend, IN, where she studied business and met the love of her life, Charles Spornick, at neighboring Notre Dame. Cathi and Charles married in 1982 in South Bend and eventually moved to Georgia where they raised two children, Nick and Anna. She had a successful career in banking and finance, from which she would eventually step away to pursue her passion of working in the arts and in community building. Cathi obtained a master’s degree in arts administration at Savannah College of Art and Design and then finished her career as a fundraiser for multiple non-profit organizations, truly having an impact across Atlanta. She was an avid supporter of the High Museum, Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the theatre. Her home was full of beautiful paintings, pieces of art and a garden seemingly always in bloom. She was a woman of faith, and believed in serving God by uplifting her community; giving generously of her time, talents and resources. She was beloved and will be missed by many.
Cathi had a passion for all things Italian, an interest that she shared with her husband of 36 years, Charles Spornick, who passed away in 2018. They faithfully attended Italian class every Tuesday night for many years and her home was full of Italian cuisine and art. They visited Italy yearly and held special memories from their travels. She loved Christmas, leaving her tree up well into January and starting Christmas music early in the fall, occasionally heard in the summer. She advocated for the less fortunate and showed kindness to everyone she met. Cathi was committed to creating and cultivating beauty, and was truly a light to this world, which will continue to shine in her legacy of love.
A funeral mass limited to a small number of family will be held at St. Thomas More at 2pm on Thursday December 10th, and interment to follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA. Those who love Cathi may honor her legacy by attending a virtual stream of the funeral or by joining the family at the interment, at 4pm. This will be an outdoor event and the cemetery requests all guests social distance with masks. The family will also hold a memorial service at a future date for those who are unable to travel or attend during this time, with details forthcoming.
Cathi knew God in both the liturgy and in the beauty of the garden, as such, in lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to St. Thomas More church or to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens at www.atlantabg.org/donate.
