Charles Dennis Spornick, beloved husband and father died suddenly and unexpectedly May 17, 2018 at the age of 64. He was born September 14, 1953 in East Chicago, Indiana to Charles and Norma Jean Spornick. All who knew and loved him knew he had a heart for all things Chicago, most especially the Cubs. Chuck was a scholar, completing two masters degrees in history and library science and was awarded a PhD in medieval history from the University of Notre Dame. He led a distinguished career in academic librarianship and retired from Emory University in September 2017 after serving for 31 years. Chuck was an avid kayaker and outdoorsman. He cycled and hiked, but the river was a sacred place for him and he enjoyed living on the Chattahoochee River in Roswell. Chuck was a gifted photographer and shared this with his wife Cathi of 36 years. Chuck and Cathi shared a deep love of Italy and travelled every year to explore the country they loved. They studied Italian together and attended weekly class faithfully for many years. Chuck was a faith-filled man of the highest character. He was a gentle soul with a beautiful smile and a sense of humor that would lighten anyone’s day. He loved gangster movies, had an eclectic taste in music, a brilliant mind, and a keen sense of adventure. Chuck’s family was the most important thing in his life and he was a tender and loving father to Nicholas, age 34 who lives in Baltimore and Anna, age 31 who lives in Atlanta. A funeral Mass will be held at Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church on Saturday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m. The inurnment will immediately follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. Chuck knew God in two places; in Liturgy and in God’s creation outdoors. In honor of this, the family requests in lieu of flowers a donation in Chuck’s memory be made to Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church 2030 Old Alabama Rd, Roswell, GA 30076 or to Chattahoochee Parks Conservancy, (the 501(c)(3)) friends group for the Chattahoochee River NRA at chattahoocheeparks.org/donate.
