

Mrs. Dorothy Lee Waller Gandy of Marietta, formerly of Sandy Springs was born August 30, 1920 in Texarkana, Texas and died January 1, 2017 in Marietta, GA at the age of 96. She grew up in Memphis, TN. In1940, she was the Memphis Cinderella Contest Winner and competed at the World’s Fair Cinderella Contest. Dorothy joined Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority while attending Rhodes College in Memphis. Her sorority was a large part of her life as she joined every Alumni group as she moved around with her husband who was in the military. . She had met her husband, Russell Gandy, while working for an airline during World War II. She lived in many cities but settled down in Atlanta with her husband, daughter and son in the 1960’s’ calling Sandy Springs her home for many years where she was a member of the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. The Atlanta Alumni Chapter of AOII was very important to her, most importantly the “Rose Circle”. They became her lifelong friends. She loved gardening and fresh flowers and certainly had a green thumb. She loved her grandchildren and loved traveling with Lark and Melissa especially to Colorado to see her son Steve. She moved from Sandy Springs to Marietta in the 1980”s to be closer to Gloria, Lark and Melissa. She also loved all of her great grandchildren very much, Larkin “Mason” Fowler IV, James Ashford Rogers, Kate Lee Rogers, William Haskell Fowler, Elizabeth Marion (“Eliza”) Fowler and Lillian Kay Rogers. She was a bookkeeper by trade and retired from Cobb County School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Newton Gandy and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Gloria G. and Howard Atkinson of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Linda Gandy of Silverthorne, CO; grandchildren, Melissa and Steve Rogers of Marietta; Lark and Julie Fowler of New York City, NY and 6 great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 3 p.m. at the Sunrise Chapel Mausoleum in Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Sunrise Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or The National Arthritis Foundation.
