
He was born October 31, 1929 in Evanston, IL to Carl and Irene Grotnes. He grew up in Park Ridge, IL. He was the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, WI. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned his Master of Accounting from Northwestern University. He received several honorary doctorates. He was named Outstanding Mechanical Engineer by Purdue University in 1996.
He married his college sweetheart Nancy Jane Hammond. They had three children, Carl, Gail and Connie. After working in Chicago for several years, Eugene decided to start his own business. Together with his brother Charles, they founded Atlanta Grotnes Machine Co.
He was an avid golfer and could be found most Saturdays playing at the Atlanta Athletic Club where he was a member since 1974. They also owned a home at Hilton Head for many years. He traveled the world for both business and for pleasure with his family. He enjoyed a fine cigar and a Manhattan.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Nancy, his son, Carl C. Grotnes II, and his beloved dog, Grote . He survived by his daughters, Gail Elizabeth Fenner, and Connie Jane Kramer (Tom), his daughter in law, Alice Grotnes, 11 grandchildren and 5 great granddaughters.
