Dr. Nassar was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, where he completed his early education at the Jesuit Colegio San Pedro Claver. He received his doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from Javeriana University School of Medicine in Bogota, and in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia in 1968.
He proudly served in the United States Army as a Doctor before establishing his private practice in 1973. He was the Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics at South Fulton Hospital in Atlanta, delivering tens of thousands of babies in his 55 year long career.
Dr. Nassar revolutionized infertility surgery and developed techniques and instruments studied and used today. He was a celebrated author of multiple publications included in the medical journals of infertility and an elected fellow to many prominent universities around the globe, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Washington, D.C. He maintained enrollment in the Department of Continuing Education of Harvard Medical School.
His dedication to continuing education led him to create teaching programs throughout Central and South America, where he shared both his knowledge and instruction with future generations of doctors. Dr. Nassar held the role of Assistant Clinical Professor and Physician at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
He is recognized worldwide from his lecturing tours teaching the discoveries he continued to develop.
In 2018, Dr. Nassar retired at the age of 80, continuing as a consultant and mentor to his many beloved students and residents.
Above his lifetime of accomplishments in medicine, his most valued achievement was his family.
Dr. Nassar is survived by his dearly loved wife of 59 years, Emma C. Nassar, his four children, Sandra Nassar Werner, Gabriel Nassar Jr, Monika Nassar Smith, and Alexander Nassar and his 6 grandchildren, Nicolas Bauguss, Christopher Bauguss, Sofia Werner, Gabriella Werner, Antonia Nassar and Samuel Smith. He is also survived by his sisters, Cecilia Bohorquez Nassar and Nora Manrique Nassar and his many adored nieces and nephews.
Dr. Nassar touched so many lives and his cherished friends that span the globe are a testament to a life well lived.
A Mass in honor of Dr. Nassar will be held on Saturday February 4th, 2023 at 11 am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Atlanta, with visitation to follow at the Nassar home.
