

Mrs. Garnett Hanna Cobb passed away October 9, 2013 at the age of 104. She was born in Indianapolis, IN on October 3, 1909 to Hattie and Grover Hanna. She had two sisters, Rose and Violet, and a brother Howard, who preceded her in death. She married John T. Cobb of Ellijay, GA after WW11 in 1946. They were married for 60 years until his death in 2006. She is survived by her son John T. Cobb, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Rome, GA, and a number of nieces and nephews. She had 32 years banking experience, 23 years with First National Bank of Atlanta. The last 5 years were at the Sandy Springs branch. She has been a member of the Sandy Springs Garden Club since 1957. She served as President for 3 terms, Treasurer for 10 years, and held other offices. She was a founding member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Sandy Springs and was the Financial Assistant for 15 years. She was chosen from 2,300 First National Bank of Atlanta employees to introduce the new BankAmerica Card (today’s VISA card) in 1974 in all advertisement literature and in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. She helped save the original “Sandy Springs” site from development (now known as Heritage Green area), obtained the Williams-Payne farm house, and helped guide its restoration in to the Williams-Payne Museum. She was a founding member of the Sandy Springs Foundation and the Sandy Springs Festival. She served on the Board of Trustees for 13 years (until 2001), was treasurer of the Foundation for 8 years (until 1993), co-chaired the Interiors Committee for the Williams-Payne House for over 8 years, and was a member of the following committees: Property, Finance, Interior, Historic Research & Oral History, Recognition, Garden, and Scrap Book. She was a member of the Resident Owner Community Club and Motivator for the 5th floor residents. She worked on the Press Corp, submitting articles every four months for the Condo Newsletter. Also she was Chairperson for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program to recruit volunteers to work with the Sandy Springs Foundation. She was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution 2010 Certificate for Historic Preservation. She was voted “Honeyette” winner at the 2010 Sandy Springs Festival. She was selected “Sandy Springs Mom” in the June 2008 edition of Sandy Springs Living Magazine. In 2006 she was featured in the Sandy Springs Neighbor for her longtime community activism. In 2000 and 2001 she won the Spirit of Sandy Springs Award from the Sandy Springs Society. In 2000 her “history of the Sandy Springs Historic Community Foundation, Inc.” was first published. It was followed by “About Sandy Springs, A Brief History”. In 1996 she received the first annual “Garnett Cobb Outstanding Volunteer Award” from the Sandy Springs Foundation. The award continues to be given each year. In 1995 she was awarded a lifetime membership in the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and in the Sandy Springs Garden Club based on her years of service and participation in the Williams-Payne House Project. In 1991 she received a Certificate of Accomplishment in Recognition of Outstanding Contribution from the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Also in 1991 she received an award for special achievement from National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. In 1989 she was featured in the “Town” quarterly publication by Portman Berry’s Investment Northpark Town Center. This covered her participation in the development of the Williams-Payne House and the Sandy Springs Foundation. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Dr, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. The family requests no flowers, but it was her wish contributions be made to Heritage Sandy Springs, 6110 Blue Stone Rd, NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 in her honor. Please specify for the “care and maintenance of the Williams-Payne House”. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 10:00am-12:30pm at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Her ladylike manner, energy, spirit, wit, wisdom of 104 years are unsurpassed. Garnett was a wonderful wife, mother and friend to all and will be dearly missed.
