George was born September 24, 1925, in Pineville, North Carolina. He attended Hixson High School, where, at the age of 15, he met the love of his life, Thelma Hixson. At 17, George answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Navy during World War II. From 1943 to 1946, he served as Yeoman Third Class aboard the USS Columbia in the Pacific Theater. His service was a source of pride and shaped the values that defined his life.
In 1947 he graduated from Embry Riddle School of Aviation in Miami and received his private pilot license in 1949. Shortly after the war, George married Thelma on August 21, 1946, in Ringgold, Georgia. Their marriage of 69 years was a testament to their unwavering love, partnership, and shared adventures until Thelma's passing in 2015. Together, they raised a loving family and built a legacy of kindness and service.
George was a dedicated member and Elder of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs, Georgia, where he and Thelma joined in 1967. As devoted stewards of their community, they managed The Pantry for many years, providing essential items to needy families. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons, being recognized for over 60 years as a Master Mason.
Professionally, George enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career with General Electric Supply Co., beginning in Miami and advancing as Manager in both Charlotte and Atlanta. He retired in 1988. A passionate traveler, George visited 28 countries during his lifetime, including Cuba, Russia, Japan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, and Australia. Through their involvement with the Friendship Force, George and Thelma embraced the opportunity to learn about and connect with diverse cultures. They graciously welcomed visitors from around the world into their Atlanta home and cherished stays with host families during their travels.
In 2002, George and Thelma were honored to join the Friendship Force delegation led by President Jimmy Carter on his historic visit to Cuba, where they met President Fidel Castro. This extraordinary experience reflected their lifelong commitment to fostering global friendship and understanding.
George’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his three sons, one daughter, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: Gary Henry (Suzanne) of Charlottesville, VA; Keith Henry (Dianne) of Waleska, GA; David Henry of Atlanta, GA; and Amy Van Hook (James) of Portland, OR. His grandchildren include Matt Henry, John Henry, Keegan Van Hook, Ainsley Van Hook, and Amber Henry, and his great-grandson, Finn Henry.
