Gerald F. Murphy

Gerald F. Murphy, Jr. “Murph” of Dunwoody, GA, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2013 at the age of 70 surrounded by his family. Murph was born in New York City on May 20th, 1942. Jerry never knew his father who died when was a toddler. He learned the value of hard work toiling at the corner grocery at the age of 12 and Camp Pius in New Hampshire as a teenager. This work ethic was passed on to his recently deceased younger brother Bill, and can be attributed to his mother Anne. He attended Xavier High School in NYC before enrolling at Georgetown University in the ROTC program in Washington D.C. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer and Lieutenant Murphy earned numerous awards while training future soldiers for the conflict in Vietnam. A distinguished 35 year career at International Business Machines followed. He was recognized with many personal awards, but his greatest satisfaction lay in promoting and advancing the careers of those who worked for him. He leaves behind many grateful colleagues and protégés. While many colleagues flocked to sandy beaches upon retirement, he was content to remain in Dunwoody and indulge in his passions, family and golf. On any given Sunday you could find him on the couch watching golf and enjoying time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Murph is survived by his wife of 50 years Patricia, his son Gerald III, his wife Carolyn of Duluth, grandchildren Joseph and Hannah, his daughters Susan of Sandy Springs, GA and Kathleen of Dunwoody, GA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at All Saints Catholic Church; 2443 Mount Vernon Rd. Dunwoody GA 30338 at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 14, 2013.
